Three Ridges Beanie

By Jackie Visser’s Crochet

I am so thrilled that I am finally able to share my very first crochet pattern with you!

I've always loved making beanies. One of the first projects I learned as a new crocheter was a beanie by the Crochet Crowd. I've been hooked on beanies ever since. (Punny, I Know. 😄) So it seems fitting that my first pattern would be a beanie!

This pattern is for advanced beginners because we do decreases and a stitch called the Camel stitch. (I refer to this stitch as working in the 3rd loop.) If you have never done a Camel Stitch or decreases I do have a youtube tutorial available to you on my channel. You can click here to see the video.

I am using US terms for this pattern. The yarn I use is Lion Brands Pound Of Love. This a category 4 yarn or worsted weight. You can easily make this beanie using any 3.5oz skein of yarn. My finished beanie measures 9inches tall and 18inches in circumference at the brim. I topped my beanie with a faux fur pompom that is 3.5". But you can top your beanie with any pompom you like!

You can purchase a PDF copy of this pattern from my Etsy shop here

Okay! Let's get started!

Pattern

Band

Ch 11. In the Second Ch from the hook work 1 sc. Work one sc in each st across, Ch 1 turn. (10 SC)

Row 2-64 Work 1 sc in the BLO of each ST across. (10 SC)

(working up the band.
My band measures 2.5 inches wide.)

After completing your 64 rows, your band should measure between 17 and 19 inches without stretching. Depending on the yarn you use and your tension you may need to adjust your rows. Just keep your numbers even. (I like even numbers when it comes to decreasing at the top of the beanie) If you adjust your rows, you’ll need to adjust the number of stitches you do in round one. Match your number of rows to the number of stitches in the first round. Example. I did 64 rows so I will have 64 stitches in my first round.

Fold the band in half, lining up the ends. Slst in the BLO of each st on both sides of the band.

(joining the band with slip stitches all the way up)

Turn the band right side up.

Do not fasten off

Round 1: Ch 1. 1 Sc in every sc row of the band all the way around. Slst to join. (64 sc)

Round 19: Decrease round. Ch 1.  Sc2tog all the way around. Slst to join. 8 sc.

Fasten off.  Leave a tail long enough to sew the top.

Sewing the top:

With your yarn needle weave the tail around the beanie of the hat going over and under all the stitches. Pull tight to close. Push your needle to the inside of the beanie. Flip the beanie inside out to weave in your ends. Flip the beanie right side out and add your favorite pompom.
